BIJOU PETERBOROUGH PREVIEW

Trendy, cosy, and quite unlike anything else you’ll find in Peterborough – just a few words that sum up the city’s chic new Bijou bar, which is set to open its doors wide from today (June 17).

The ESP team was fortunate to get a sneak peek of the Bridge Street venue ahead of its grand opening – and we know it's simply going to dazzle you as much as it did us!

Bijou is all about the cocktails. And you simply need to sample its vast cocktail menu. Every person who works there is a mixologist, so you know you’re in good hands. A Cherry Bakewell (featuring Amaretto, Maraschino Liqueur, lemon and lemonade) or a Maisie Martiniz (gin, Maraschino Liqueur, sweet vermouth and orange bitters) anyone?

But Bijou offers more than just cocktails, as we discovered during a behind-the-scenes tour. The venue is a draw all by itself, with a stunning cherry blossom tree feature overlooking the main bar as you walk inside and versatile upstairs and downstairs areas to chill and unwind.

Our Man About Town, Pep Cipriano, was a particular fan of the Bijou basement; a self-contained, cosy and intimate room complete with its own entrance and bar, DJ booth, piano, and plush velvet chairs to seat 50 people scattered throughout. With a selection of events in the pipeline, from a monthly comedy club to music nights, ranging from jazz, soul, funk and R&B, there’s something to suit all tastes.

You may even forget, for a moment, that you’re in Peterborough, just like our very own Man About Town, who said: “The minute I stepped inside the basement I was transported to a trendy Manhattan bar – I felt like I was on holiday, not in a bar in Bridge Street.

"The whole area is incredibly plush; I can imagine myself ordering a glass of wine and chilling out to the mellow music playing in the background.”

Upstairs, visitors can hide away in the Bijou snug, an area which comfortably seats 16 people and overlooks the hubbub of the main bar.

And if you’re feeling peckish, you’ll be able to order tapas, snacks and small plates within weeks once the kitchen is up and running.

One of the most unique aspects of Bijou is its many faces: whether you want to enjoy some cocktails with the girls, an intimate glass of wine with your partner, hold a corporate or private function (the rooms can be hired out) or simply sip a coffee and make use of the WiFi for remote working, you’re covered.

As Bijou owner Adam Davis says: “We have something to offer absolutely everyone: pop in for a coffee upstairs, head downstairs for entertainment or hire it out for a work meeting. We have some cracking members of staff and they’re really going to put a stamp on the place!”

You heard it here first!

Bijou officially opens today (June 17). You can pop in between 8am – 11pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 1am on Friday and Saturday.
