COURTYARD BISTRO CAFÉ BOURNE FOOD REVIEW

ESP's food writer Kelly Jackson is always on the look out for somewhere new to try, especially if it's dog friendly, so having heard about this great café in Bourne, Kelly headed over to give it a try...

I was amazed to learn the Courtyard Bistro Café in Bourne’s Crown Walk only opened its doors in July. During a visit over a Friday late morning, I found this little gem of a bistro already bustling with diners, and well before the lunchtime rush.

We chose a seat in the corner and perused the menu – take it from me, you’ll find it a challenge to decide what to have, whether you’re there for breakfast, lunch or simply a drink (you should see the milkshakes!).

After umming and ahhing over several items, I finally opted for one of the Courtyard sandwiches, filled with battered fish fingers and tartare sauce with watercress salad. Other delicious fillings include slow roasted pulled chicken in pesto mayonnaise with chorizo ham and rocket, and beetroot hummus feta with pickled vegetables and rocket.

My husband went for the English breakfast, served with sausages, bacon, mushrooms, grilled tomato, hashed brown, eggs cooked to your liking, baked beans and two slices of toast.

For drinks, we both had breakfast tea, which came out in two little teapots that provided two cups of tea each. Also on the menu you can find tasty delights including bagels, a ploughman’s plate, small plates such as soup and scotch eggs, and a little bites menu for children.

As we waited for our food to arrive, I took in the various customers coming and going. The Courtyard Café is inclusive and welcomes everyone.

Parents and children came in for milkshakes and breakfast, making the most of a children’s corner where youngsters can keep themselves entertained

Dog owners can make themselves comfy with their pooches, the staff providing water bowls for thirsty hounds and dog treats on sale next to the counter.

After chatting to the owner Georgie, who runs the café with husband Chris, she explained plans were afoot to launch a baby and toddler group from September, as well as a biker night every other Friday. Motorcycle enthusiasts can park up outside and enjoy some food before continuing on their journey.

The food is locally-sourced and I can attest it’s absolutely delicious. The bread of my sandwich was so soft and fresh, while my husband confirmed it was one of the best English breakfasts he’d had.

We just didn’t have space for cake, but Georgie sent us away each with a slice of cake in a takeout box – it just meant we could enjoy more of the Courtyard Bistro’s offering later that day. And it was certainly worth the wait!

The Courtyard Bistro Café is open from 8.30-3pm Tuesdays to Fridays, and 9-4pm on Saturdays. It is definitely well worth a visit and we will most certainly return.
