ESP'S food writer Kelly Jackson discover another Peterborough venue with fantastic views, ideal for food or just tea and cake...
I did two things for the first time a few weeks back when a friend popped to town for a visit: a walk at Thorpe Meadows (how had I never been here before?), followed by a pitstop at The Dragonfly nearby.
The hotel, which overlooks Peterborough’s international rowing course, boasts a charming bar and restaurant that is perfect for a break after a nice walk.
There's a lovely outdoor terrace, but you can also sit inside and still get the incredible view of the lake (and rowers practising their technique) while staying cool/warm/dry at the same time!
So, on to the food: if you fancy a pub lunch, you’ll be spoiled for choice with the vast menu, offering everything from pizza and burgers to pies and other pub favourites as well as lighter bites and sandwiches.
There's a beautiful conservatory area especially for Afternoon Teas which looked perfect and one to try out in future.
A selection of sweet treats were displayed at the bar, which tempted us as we ordered a coffee and a hot chocolate.
What treats did we have, I hear you ask? Well, a slice of simple yet delicious Victoria Sponge Cake complimented my hot chocolate extremely well, while my companion opted for a Red Velvet Cake to go with her coffee. And you certainly get a slab, too!
It was a lovely location to spend a couple of hours putting the world to rights over coffee and cake. What more could we ask for?
The Dragonfly Hotel is based at Thorpe Meadows and the restaurant is open 12 noon until 9pm every day.
