This third helping of my Big Fat Greek Wedding takes viewers on a delightful journey down memory lane – offering a pleasant watch that will mostly appeal to fans of the original film.
In this second sequel, we once again see Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) and her extended family, who are faced with the passing of their family patriarch, Gus, played by Michael Constantine – and appeared in the first two films – who sadly passed away in 2021.
When the family embark on a journey to Greece for a reunion, it not only serves as a means for bonding, but it also offers Toula the opportunity to fulfil one of her father's final wishes: to present his childhood diary to long-lost friends from his past.
For those unfamiliar with the series, there simply won’t be enough here to win you over. The film heavily relies on the established characters and their relationships, assuming a level of familiarity with the story and its dynamics, and it may be challenging to fully appreciate the humour and emotional moments without the context of what came before.
But for the die-hards, this is a welcome opportunity to revisit the lovable Portokalos family and their eccentricities. The film successfully captures the essence and spirit of its predecessor, allowing us to reconnect with beloved characters and their often-hilarious antics – and there is a sense of comfort and familiarity in seeing everything unfold once again on the screen.
The screenplay – while not particularly innovative – does a commendable enough job of evoking the same light-hearted humour and heart-warming moments that made the first film a massive sleeper hit success way back in 2002.
The witty one-liners, cultural clashes, and endearing moments of familial love are all present, providing a sense of nostalgia and a warm, feel-good atmosphere.
The performances of the cast, led by Vardalos (who also directs) and John Corbett (as Ian Miller), are as charming and delightful as ever. The leads may not quite have the spark seen in the first, but I guess years of marriage will do that to you. That last part is mostly a joke.
Visually, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 maintains the same vibrant and colourful aesthetics that characterised the first film. The lively Greek culture and traditions are once again showcased – creating an immersive experience that will no doubt put a smile on your face throughout. But potentially only if you’re a fan.
