Sonic 3 is a nostalgic thrill ride that will appeal to all ages.
Taking my six-year-old to watch this was a joy. The cinema was packed with excited families, but what stood out was the number of adults there without children. It’s clear that Sonic is more than just a kids’ franchise – it’s a beloved cultural icon that unites generations.
In the third instalment, Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) reunite to face their most formidable foe yet – Shadow, a mysterious new enemy with powers unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.
Outmatched in every way, the trio must seek an unlikely alliance to stop Shadow and protect the planet.
This film truly offers something for everyone. The kids clearly loved the dazzling effects, fast-paced action, and toilet humour, while us 'big kids' were treated to plenty of nostalgic nods and clever innuendos. It’s rare to find a film that balances both so effortlessly, but Sonic 3 pulls it off.
The standout addition this time is Shadow, voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves. Reeves brings his signature coolness to the role, making Shadow feel like John Wick with a hedgehog twist – and it works brilliantly. His brooding demeanour and formidable powers make him a compelling villain, raising the stakes in ways the previous films didn’t.
Another highlight is Jim Carrey, who doubles down on the fun by playing both Dr. Robotnik and Robotnik’s eccentric grandfather. This is Carrey at his most unrestrained, reminiscent of his iconic roles in The Mask and The Grinch. One of my favourite scenes involves Robotnik in an over-the-top dance routine – to the Chemical Brothers’ Galvanize – which I’ve since learned was Carrey’s idea. It’s moments like these that remind you of his unmatched comedic talent that, for whatever reason, felt a little restrained prior.
From start to finish, Sonic 3 is a fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled adventure that keeps you hooked.
Whether you’re a lifelong Sonic fan or new to the franchise, it’s a fantastic experience – a celebration of a true pop culture icon.
