Things to do in January: Visit the Journeys with Nature exhibition at Peterborough Museum
We’ve long been fans of local artist Jeni Cairns and her wonderful metalwork art. She creates the most amazing pieces inspired by her love of nature and this exhibition is the perfect chance to see several pieces up close.
It’s not just metalwork though, Jeni also paints and creates and Journeys Through Nature features some beautiful pieces on display. This solo exhibition showcases how three years of immersive nature connection has transformed her creative process.
Jeni told ESP – “I’m so excited to have lots of my work on display in such a great space, big white walls are a luxury for an artist and being able to bring a vision to life is just the best.
"Sculptures look so different in outdoor and indoor environments and I think this exhibition shows the impact. I hope people will enjoy the two exhibitions and take some new ways to connect to nature away with them.”
Jeni’s works link in with another exhibition as you move through the gallery space to The Imaginal Field looking at how we have lost our connection with nature and how we can rebuild it.
This exhibition is an introduction to The Imaginal Field project with some of the artists that will be involved. The project is based on a 5-acre drained and hard-farmed field in Fenland, recently sown with wildflower species and a new hedgerow. Over a year artists will have residency and experience the landscape through a unique space. They will create new visual and multimedia arts based on the area's heritage, traditions, soils, and biodiversity.
It was a great way to spend some time on a gloomy winter day topped off with a tasty sandwich in Squires café, which is a handy pitstop anytime you’re in town if you just want to catch up with friends.
The café offers light bites including cake, jacket potatoes and freshly made sandwiches.
Both exhibitions are well worth a look and on display through until March 29. It's free to view but donations are appreciated and the Museum itself has some great collections to view if you want to extend you visit.
