LAMBS STAR AT FLAG FEN FAMILY WEEKEND

Some new arrivals at Flag Fen in Peterborough will be the star attractions over the August Bank Holiday weekend as the archaeological site hosts some special family events to celebrate the birth of rare Soay lambs.

Flag Fen’s shepherd, David, was caught on the hop when a surprise lamb was born in early August with more on the way. The local attraction has now planned a weekend when you can meet the lambs and enjoy falconry, crafts, stalls and family fun on August 28 and 29.

Flag Fen is home to a small flock of rare breed, Soay Sheep which consists of 48 ewes and just one ram. Soay sheep are hardy and self-sufficient miniature Sheep.

The flock was established at Flag Fen over twenty years ago as part of the development of the visitor experience.

Most domestic sheep are lambed in the springtime, but in keeping with this rare breed, it's not uncommon for Soay sheep to lamb in the summer. However, Angus the ram has lived with the ewes for seven years without producing any lambs so it was quite a surprise for Flag Fen’s shepherd David.

“As unexpected as it was, it’s been lovely to see the new arrivals here at Flag Fen, we didn’t think Angus had it in him!” David told us.

"The team here have quickly adapted to the new arrivals, making sure the flock are secure and have access to plenty of shelter. Soay sheep spent many generations as ferals and know how to look after themselves. Ewes lamb easily and make excellent mothers so we are letting nature lead the way and are only on standby if we need to assist. The ewes have successfully delivered six lambs so far and we are patiently waiting for more to arrive.”

To celebrate the new arrivals, the team at Flag Fen have planned a ewe-nique weekend of events over the August Bank Holiday.

You’ll be able to meet the new Soay lambs, enjoy crafts and games, face painting, displays by Fens Falconry over the weekend with a flying display at 1.15 on Monday August 29.

Lincolnshire spinners & weavers group will also be back again to showcase traditional textile making using Soay and other sheep’s locks. You can talk to local experts who'll have samples of different types of natural fleeces available as well as beautiful handmade wares for sale.

You can also take a walk around Flag Fen to see what life was like in the Bronze Age, view the new round house and archaeological discoveries and stop off for tea and cake in the café and gift shop.
