LATE NIGHT SHOPPING AND EXTRA MARKETS TO ENCOURAGE US TO SHOP LOCAL IN PETERBOROUGH

It’s hoped late night shopping and three outdoor markets this month will help everyone stay safe and shop local in Peterborough.

We’re all trying to get our Christmas shopping done and here at ESP we’re encouraging you all to support the local stores and independents too, to help boost the local economy.

There are lots of ways to do it in person and online including the Nene Park Visitor Centre gift shop (www.nenepark.org.uk/shop), the Cathedral’s indoor Christmas market (Dec 4 and 5), the city’s online shop for items by local artists and Peterborough souvenirs www.peterboroughgifthop.com and many more.

While for some, internet shopping has been a necessity during the Covid-19 pandemic, others still prefer to travel into the city centre to browse and see items up close before buying, plus the Christmas lights are now on making it a more festive experience.

Now more stores in the city centre are offering late night opening in the run-up to the festive period. There’ll be extended shopping hours from 8am to 8pm at many city centre shops to help you beat the crowds – but check before you head out that the shop you want to visit is taking part.

Peterborough City Council is reminding everyone there are safety precautions in place in the city centre to help you shop as safely as possible with signage reminding everyone to wear face coverings (unless they are exempt from doing so) and marshals on hand to provide advice and guidance on social distancing restrictions.

To help attract people in and offer something fresh there’ll be a Continental Market in the city centre from December 10 to 13, a Farmers Market on December 11 and 12 and a Vegan Market on Saturday December 19.

Councillor Marco Cereste, cabinet member for street scene at Peterborough City Council, said: “Our city centre shops and restaurants have had a difficult year. Following the spring lockdown, we did have some recovery, however this doesn’t make up for the months they have been unable to trade.

“Travelling to and shopping in crowds is a risk to social distancing and of course is dependent on others behaviour. However, Peterborough City Council and traders are trying to minimise this risk where possible. We remind those visiting shops in the run-up to the festive period to adhere to the social distancing guidelines and to ensure they are wearing a face covering where required, unless they are exempt, to protect themselves and others.

“So please come and visit our city centre, but do so safely and follow the important Covid-19 advice and guidance being given.”
