MONSTERS OF THE SEA ARE HERE!

It’s hoped Peterborough Cathedral will be flooded with visitors this summer keen to explore the latest marine themed exhibition, the Monsters of the Sea which launched today.

Giant tentacles on top of the iconic Norman arch set the scene – and the backdrop for many selfies no doubt – for the incredible displays of animatronic sea creatures inside.

Monsters of the Sea is the latest in the cathedral’s annual series of impressive exhibitions which has seen this beautiful building house dinosaurs and Star Wars exhibits drawing visitors from far and wide.

You can expect a rich array of ocean dwelling creatures past and present, from Ammonites to the giants of the deep, along with interactive displays and educational activities. It’s perfect for the summer holidays and runs until September 1.

It’s brought to us by World Touring Exhibitions and director Corrado Canonici (pictured above) says it has proved popular wherever it has gone on show around the world – “It’s spectacular and educational – big monsters from prehistoric eras and more recent times – they are just amazing.

"You are seeing one of the most beautiful cathedral’s in England and one of the most stunning animatronic exhibitions around – what’s not to like?”

Vice Dean Tim Alban Jones (pictured above) says the exhibition has two main purposes – “The main objective is to get people to come and see this magnificent space.

"It’s been here for 900 years and there are so many people who will never come in, but if they come in for one of these exhibitions, while they’re looking at the sea creatures they’ll admire the architecture.

“This is also our major fundraiser – it costs £4 a minute to keep this place going so yes, we have to get people in.”

There will be a range of special events to accompany the exhibition including online talks, events for children, craft sessions, yoga and a nautical themed family film screening in Cathedral Square organised by Peterborough Positive on August 18.

The exhibition features 16 displays and is set to enthral audiences from now until to September 1 so if you can’t face the queues to the seaside this summer, take a plunge into the depths and enjoy a trip to the ocean a little closer to home!
