We can all visit Peterborough Cathedral again as the city’s iconic building opens to visitors and for a range of events.
This Friday is the start of the Cathedral’s Christmas Market followed by the Tower Tours, the Christmas Magic concert and Christmas services.
The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough, said – “We’re delighted that once again we can open the doors of the Cathedral for some of our special events and for our Christmas services. The past year has been challenging for us all and while Christmas won’t feel quite the same as it usually does the chance to meet together, to hear (if not to sing) the familiar carols, words and music and to experience the extraordinary atmosphere of our great building will surely bring comfort and joy to many. And for those who will be unable to join us there will be a full provision of online services too. We look forward to welcoming you!”
As Peterborough is in Tier 2 with certain restrictions still in place Peterborough Cathedral is re-opening to visitors with safety in mind.
You can get some shopping done in a calmer, less crowded way at the Cathedral’s Christmas Market on Friday December 4 and Saturday December 5 with timed entry slots. Booking your tickets and going along at your designated time should make it a relaxed and safe experience without all the usual hustle and bustle!
The opening times are 10am to 5pm and 7pm and 9pm on Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturday. Grab your tickets quick by heading to – www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/143/section.aspx/142/christmas_market_2020.
We’ve all been keen to get out an about so what better way to get a sense of freedom than a fantastic view over the city at one of their Tower Tours? They’re being held on selected dates, starting on Saturday December 5 – you could combine a Tower Tour with some Christmas Market shopping. Check the website for details www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/towertour. The tours have been carefully redesigned with Covid secure measures in place.
The Cathedral will also re-open to visitors wishing to look around the great building, from Monday December 7. The new opening times will be 10am – 4pm from Monday to Saturday, and 12 noon to 3pm on Sundays. Just check before you visit as there are changes to these times on some dates. Details are on the website here – www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/opening-times.aspx.
From Sunday December 6 public worship in the Cathedral will resume, including several carol services when you can listen to the choir sing festive favourites (but not join in due to Covid restrictions). For many of the Christmas services you’ll need to book a free ticket in advance to ensure effective social distancing. A full list of services and links for booking are on the website here – www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/christmas2020.aspx.
If you can’t make it to the Cathedral the good news is that many of the Christmas Services, including those on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, will also be live streamed so that you can still enjoy them from home.
