A Peterborough hairdresser who’s raised thousands for charity says she’s been overwhelmed with messages since her recent appearance on BBC’s The One Show.
Liza Raby who runs Spencers hair salon has raised over £150,000 for charity thanks to her fundraising efforts for her son Spencer who has learning disabilities. She was recently featured on the TV show when she received a One Big Thank You from celebrity Mark Wright.
“My social media went mad and it’s still going strong!” says Liza. “I’ve had so many lovely messages and support from clients with gifts of flowers too from my clients.
“I even had contact from my old boss Sue who trained me when I was 16 and I've been trying to track her down!”
It’s been a whirlwind of publicity for Liza since her appearance on the show with interviews on BBC Radio Lincolnshire and PCRFM with Kev Lawrence.
“Spencer's taking it all in his stride and is oblivious to his fame!” says Liza. “People have been commenting wherever I go like the Skoda garage and the local Bourne leisure centre I attend.”
Liza’s son Spencer has multiple learning disabilities and lives at Home From Home Care in Lincolnshire. His mum has raised thousands with her fundraising efforts for good causes including Say Hello, a charity that helps adults with learning disabilities.
She was surprised by The Only Way Is Essex star Mark Wright in her Peterborough hair salon, and then watched a big screen which showed a host of special thank you messages, including from The One Show host Alex Jones and TV personality Stacey Solomon, another of Liza’s favourite TV personalities.
“I watched it with close family and friends. It was very emotional to see and I've watched it many times. I felt very overwhelmed for the One Big Thank You and very appreciative for the acknowledgment.
“I think the biggest shock was to see Spencer and all my loved ones who are very special to me as I know how difficult it is to get everyone together at short notice! Especially Spencer who was loving that all his loved ones were together.”
Liza was nominated for the thank you by her friend and business partner Hannah Lowndes and says it all came as a complete surprise she still can’t quite believe – “The secret was apparently kept for many months. Hannah cancelled clients but still left them so I wouldn't have a clue. Clients were told do not message Liza back if she asks you where you are!”
Liza added – “It will definitely help raise awareness of the charities we support and hopefully bring in a business sponsor for Spencer's Over the Rainbow Ball on 20 April 2024.”
