On Saturday May 28 at 10am, the Peterborough Lido celebrates its 80th Anniversary when it officially opens for the summer season, with all visitors being offered FREE entry on opening day.
The popular outdoor swimming pool on Bishops Road sees over 20,000 visitors pass through the turnstiles every summer with local residents and visitors enjoying the great outdoor swimming facilities. Families and keen swimmers can enjoy the large heated 50m pool, a learner pool and a paddling pool for toddlers – all set in this iconic Art Deco inspired building.
This year’s opening is especially nostalgic having seen 80 successful seasons with generations visiting since its opening in 1936. The opening also marks one of the first official engagements for the new Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor David Sanders, with a 1930s band playing songs of the era.
Cllr Sanders will also be unveiling a plaque and weathervane in memory of locally renowned lifeguard and personality Walter Cornelius who worked for many years as a Lifeguard at the Peterborough Lido. Walter worked tirelessly to raise money for local charities, breaking over 50 world records and is most well-known for his attempt to fly across the River Nene wearing a set of homemade wings – the weathervane beautifully captures this iconic image.
Visitors to the Peterborough Lido can relax on the expansive sunbathing terraces, swim in three heated outdoor pools and children can enjoy the new themed play area. Food and refreshments are available at the outdoor Lido café and families can enjoy their own picnic on the large grass lawn.
The Lido offers swimming with family friendly music as well as a range of summer event days which include the fun inflatable sessions with giant blow up zorbs and boats, a brilliant fun session not to be missed.
Also as part of this year’s event, Vivacity is pleased to announce it will be offering FREE swimming to all children under 5 at the Peterborough Lido and at all other Vivacity swimming pools across the city.
The Lido will be open daily from 9am-7pm throughout the summer and the general public is invited to come down and enjoy the Lido FREE on opening day.
A family ticket for four is just £16.50 or £26.00 with food (includes a burger and a drink each).
Entry to the Lido is £5.80 for adults and £4.10 for children
