Peterborough Photographic Society is exhibiting examples from its 125 years of local photography with a dispaly in Peterborough Museum.
In 1887, a small group of keen photographers started meeting at the Bedford Coffee Tavern, on Queen Street, and formed the Peterborough Photographic Society. 125 years later, their celebratory anniversary exhibition has now opened at Peterborough Museum’s Coffee House to mark the special occasion.
ESP went along to the launch where Deputy Mayor Councillor June Stokes helped officially launch the exhibition along with members of the Society.
One of those exhibiting is none other than our very own ESP photographer Emma Bothamley whose stunning photo of a spitfire in the grounds of Peterborough Cathedral sits alongside dozens of excellent photos from other members of the Photographic Society from over the years.
“I’m really proud to be a part of a Society that has such a long history and thrilled that one of my photos was chosen to form part of this special exhibition celebrating the Society’s 125th birthday,” says Emma. “A lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to make this exhibition happen, with special thanks to our Exhibition Secretary, Craig Robins and Rachel Walmsley from Vivacity.
“The museum has been fantastic in allowing us to hold the exhibition in their community exhibition space. And as the exhibition runs now until March 10 hopefully as many people as possible will get the chance to see our members’ work from over the years. And hopefully we might even inspire some future photographers!”
Don’t miss out on visiting this fantastic exhibition! What could be better than fabulous photography and a slice of history to complement your cup of tea? It’s free admission (except on special event days) and runs through until March 10 in the coffee house at Peterborough Museum. While you’re there, make sure you take the opportunity to browse the rest of the Museum’s fabulous galleries.
