PODS and The Cresset today confirmed that the award-winning society’s production of Shrek: The Musical scheduled for September at The Cresset has been postponed and will now go ahead in May 2022.
The show was originally due to happen in May this year, but was postponed to September due to the coronavirus pandemic which caused the temporary closure of the theatre. While we still do not know if theatres will be able to stage productions in September, the current restrictions mean no rehearsals or technical work can take place at the moment, so the decision was taken to reschedule again.
Unfortunately, the rights to stage the production were not available to PODS for 2021, and so ticketholders will be waiting patiently until half term of May 2022 to see the big green ogre take to the stage. Performances will run from Tuesday 24th to Saturday 28th.
PODS Chairman Rob Bristow said: “So much planning goes into putting on a production of this scale and our incredible cast and crew have worked so hard, we were very nearly ready to go onstage, so this is incredibly disappointing news for all of us.
“Sadly the theatrical rights to perform Shrek have already been licenced to a youth group in Peterborough for next year, so we’ll have to wait until 2022 to bring our version of Shrek to The Cresset, but we will definitely be back, we can’t wait to get Shrek, Donkey and Fiona back to Duloc and we really hope all of our wonderful, loyal patrons will bear with us just a little bit longer – we promise it will be worth the wait!”
All ticketholders will be contacted directly by The Cresset in the coming days. Customers are asked to wait for the venue to contact them to discuss their options.
PODS are still riding high after their last production at The Cresset, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in October 2019 scooped three awards at the annual NODA awards, and are already setting their sights on another big production. In November 2021 they’re bringing Elf The Musical to The Cresset for a spectacular festive family romp. Based on the popular Will Ferrell film Elf, this heartwarming comedy will be a real family treat. Tickets for Elf will be on sale later this year.
