Queensgate shopping centre’s won a Green Apple Award for creating a special shopping event designed for people with varying disabilities.
The team from Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough were invited along to the Houses of Parliament to attend the Green Apple Awards. The centre’s Environmental Manager Carol Wakelin and the Centre Director Mark Broadhead attended the event in celebration for the centre being nominated for their EnAbled Event.
The EnAbled initiative was first held in December 2017 to provide an improved environment for individuals, families and their carers, all with varying disabilities, to enjoy their shopping experience. As part of this specially devised initiative, the centre built a purpose-built sensory room and introduced an EnAbled evening where visitors can shop in a calm environment with no music, tannoys and 25% lower lighting within the centre. The second event of its kind was held again at the end of last year.
Due to the success of the centre’s campaign, Queensgate Shopping Centre received the award for the Retail & Wholesale category winning the Green Champion.
Carol Wakelin said, “We pride ourselves at Queensgate on the importance of our sustainability programmes and are always looking to build upon our successes. The EnAbled initiative has allowed us to connect with our visitors and provide something special. All the positive feedback highlights the value of what we have delivered and achieved for Queensgate and the residents of Peterborough.”
