THE GRANARY TEAROOM REVIEW

Rural rustic charm at Willow Brook Farm’s café.

As tea rooms go, The Granary Tearoom at Willow Brook Farm on the outskirts of Peterborough is certainly one of the most charming I’ve visited. We headed over to try their cream tea – scoping out possible venues for a Mother’s Day treat (it’s just around the corner!).

Based in John Clare country, between Marholm and Helpston, Willow Brook Farm consists of a farm shop and butchers, plus a quaint 17th tearoom. There’s plenty of space, with a large marquee covered area greeting you as you first step inside, including dog treats on display which people can buy for their pooches.

This is a great spot for enjoying a pit stop with your dog following a walk in the surrounding countryside and nearby Southey Woods. Further inside, you enter the heart of the tea room, with cakes, crisps, jars of condiments, drinks and other treats on display, along with additional tables.

Cream teas can often be a bit hit and miss. I’ve had some before where the scones were hard and burnt, which has ruined the taste. This wasn’t the case at The Granary, however. We each had a huge homemade fruit scone, which I topped with the traditional strawberry jam and cream. The scones were soft and fluffy, with the jam and cream melting in your mouth – delicious! It was accompanied by a large pot of tea, enough for several cups each (a must when eating a cream tea).

The tea room itself has a cosy atmosphere. It’s somewhere you can easily while away a couple of hours while chatting with a friend. For £7.99 per person, the cream tea is very decently priced, especially when you factor in the fresh ingredients.

Also on the menu is an all-day breakfast (alongside various other breakfast items), and meals such as ham, egg and chips, a roast dinner, ploughman’s lunch and much more. The portions are all very generous.

With Mother’s Day coming up, The Granary is a good option to take mum for a cream tea, afternoon tea or lunch. With its rustic appeal, friendly staff and fresh ingredients, you simply can’t go wrong – and your mum will thank you for it!
