VALENTINE’S BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE LAUNCH IN PETERBOROUGH

Gavin Miller

“Han Solo is the Hulk!” bellowed my son at this morning’s screening of Marvel’s latest blockbuster.

The fourth movie instalments for both the Captain America and Bridget Jones franchises launched yesterday, to herald in the two first major box-offices releases of 2025 – just in time for an action-packed Valentine’s weekend.

And luckily being guest for screenings of both films at Queensgate’s Odeon Luxe, means ESP can give you the early non-spoiler lowdown on these highly-anticipated flicks.

The IMAX screen was the place to experience Captain America: Brave New World – in all its 3D glory – with my 11-year-old son, Joshua.

While an early Thursday night preview screening for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy – with my fiancée Liza – was just the ticket, to compliment the ‘Love’ balloon display in the foyer of Odeon.

And the great news is they are both impressive enough entries in their respective genres – giving you an appetising option of either an action-thriller or romantic-comedy – and they will both undoubtedly dominate the box-office for the foreseeable future.

Brave New World competently pieces the MCU back together as a serviceably-solid prelude to the forthcoming Avengers movies; while Mad About the Boy is a slightly more emotionally serious entry in the series, but with still enough comedic touches to keep it close enough to the much-loved formula.

Check in with ESP Magazine in the next couple of days for my full reviews with both movies screening at Peterborough’s Odeon Luxe and Showcase Cinema De Lux, right now!

Here’s a taster with early ratings below:

CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD (12A) ODEON LUXE PETERBOROUGH & SHOWCASE CINEMA DE LUX PETERBOROUGH, OUT NOW

Following the election of ex-army general Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross (Harrison Ford taking over the role from the late William Hurt) as the President of the United States, Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) former-Falcon-turned-Captain America finds himself at the centre of an international incident.

He must work to find the true masterminds behind the plot, which introduces the likes of a new Falcon (Danny Ramirez), Giancarlo Esposito’s (The Mandalorian) villainous Sidewinder, and the returning Samuel ‘Leader’ Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Oh, and a certain Red Hulk makes an appearance too . . . Rating: 3/5

BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY (15) ODEON LUXE PETERBOROUGH & SHOWCASE CINEMA DE LUX PETERBOROUGH, OUT NOW

The fourth instalment in the much-loved British movie franchise, sees Renee Zellweger’s ironically hapless Bridget Jones navigate life as a widow and single Mum – with the help of family, friends, and her former lover Daniel (Hugh Grant).

As she slowly gets back into the swing, Bridget finds herself pursued by a younger man (Leo Woodall) – and potentially a teacher (Chiwetel Ejiofor) at her children’s school – in Helen Fielding’s romantic-comedy follow-up to 2016’s Bridget Jones’ Baby. The likes of Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and Jim Broadbent reprise their previous roles . . . Rating: 3.5/5
