Avoid the January blues with a trip to the Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival this weekend, it’s guaranteed to pick you up.
It’s one of our more quirky local events and will see the streets and pubs packed with revellers following the Bear as it parades through the town. There’ll be music and dozens of Morris dancers of all types entertaining the crowds and a brilliant atmosphere.
Don’t miss this amazing winter festival from January 10 -12 with the main event and parade on Saturday January 11.
It kicks off with a ceilidh and open mic night on Friday night with music by White Bryony. Tickets are required for this one.
The big parade is on Saturday from 10.30am -3.30pm when the Straw Bear procession will dance through Whittlesey town centre accompanied by musicians, plough boys with the plough and followed by many dance teams to fill the streets with colour whatever the weather!
There will be a storyteller in a local venue when you need a break from following the Bear. This will be in the Methodist/URC Church, with sessions at 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm, with Su Squire. Admission operates on a first come first served basis.
This year the Sunday Bear Burning event is public once again, and is being held at Decoy Lake. Head down from 11am on Sunday January 12 for the burning at 12 noon but get there in good time so you don't miss anything!
If you are travelling to the Straw Bear Festival by car they advise you to use the Park & Ride service. You can park at Sir Harry Smith Community College in Whittlesey and catch a bus in from 8.30am. Please follow this link for more information https://strawbear.org.uk/whats-on/getting-to-the-bear
The annual Straw Bear Festival is always a lively one – it’s the best pub crawl, the perfect way to catch up with your mates and is so popular it’s even been included on the new Peterborough Monopoly board game!
