The 1,000 poppy art installation at Queensgate Shopping Centre has hit 500 poppies – the half way point – thanks to the support of schools and the local community.
Commissioned artist, Charron Pugsley-Hill, has been working with Nene Park Academy this week to hand make the felted poppies for the stunning Sky of Poppies installation.
Charron is also hosting another free workshop at the Westgate Arcade Pop Up Shop from 11am until 3pm on Monday May 30.
There will also be a workshop at Stamford Arts Centre on May 31 from 10am until 3pm.
The Queensgate Sky of Poppies has been created to commemorate the Battle of the Somme in World War I 100 years on and will be unveiled in the shopping centre on Friday June 24 – a week before the battle began on July 1.
Over 1,000 handmade felted poppies, each representing the 1,000 men from all sides that gave their lives at the Battle of Somme (the bloodiest battle in history), will hang from the ceiling of Queensgate and cascade to the floor in North Square (outside John Lewis).
Charron said: “The response from schools, artists, businesses and the public has been incredible and to be at the half way point is a great milestone, but we still need more volunteers and groups to help out and join in the workshops at Queensgate’s Westgate Arcade.”
